Layer Cake Sampler QAL

Amanda at http://materialgirlquilts.wordpress.com/ has an amazing QAL going on!  Use a layer cake – check!  Use half square triangles – check!  Absolutely loving this QAL.

I am using Shades of Black from Me & My Sister Designs – the layer cake is from Moda.  I am also using a plain purple Kona as well as a Moda Marble Dots in purple to give some variety to the layouts.

And six weeks later we are at block 12!  Every Friday Amanda provides two blocks to add to the QAL.  She provides pictures of her block as well as alternate layouts for the blocks.

I have been having a great time with the QAL and several of my Instragram friends who are participating.  I am not even bothered by the fact that jessicaquilter always gets her blocks done before I do (well, not bothered much I suppose).

Here’s the two most recent blocks 11 and 12 as well as the whole group of 12 that have been made to date.

And tomorrow is Friday so we should be coming to two new ones!  Join me sometime this weekend when I post those.

And again, a finish but blogging is way behind!  It needs to be quilted but I am happy with the result.  There were options for setting the blocks, including sashing and cornerstones, but I went with just having the blocks put together with an outside border.  I liked the additional patterns that formed from keeping the blocks together.  This was an amazing experience!

The Geese Vortex

My admiration of Alison Glass fabric continues, and after working with it for the Feathers QAL I decided to make some geese.  There is an awesome pattern on her website that I may one day try but for this effort I stayed relatively small (about 31 inches square).

I started by making one of my favorite patterns, A Circle of Geese.  This pattern is available from http://www.piecebynumber.com/circleofgeese.htm.   I then created some additional geese in different sizes.

And then I debated what to do and turned to my friends on Instagram who as always helped me out in terms of next steps – I debated putting feathers or arrows as a border, but then decided that I would use the column fabric I had and frame the geese – the folks on IG are so inspirational for me and so full of great ideas.  I love having other quilters to turn to for input.

Once I had that done, I created a backing using some leftover pieces.

And finally, some  straight line diagonal quilting, a binding (always a dilemma to me – again my IG friends helped me out) and a label and voila!

I think it came out super!  A couple lessons learned during this process:

(1) Do not wear headphones when you baste and quilt – you will not hear the crinkling of the paper you apparently forgot to tear off the circle of geese.  Well, gives new meaning to the ‘crinkly love’ of a quilt!

(2) When you piece a backing and believe you have it perfectly lined up, forget it.  I’ve done this more than once!  The back gets just a little off kilter.  It still looks good.

And now I am debating what to do with it.  I certainly do not need another quilt in the quilt museum known as my house.  And it isn’t really a kid’s blanket type of thing.  I debated doing it as a giveaway for my IG friends but that means I have to make a decision (or let some random generator do it).  And you see how I get with bindings!

So for all her help and putting up with my IG nonsense while I worked on this quilt, I randomly decided that pattinottessa gets first decline!

The boys and the bee

I wrote earlier about the start of the #NGAQB and you will see a couple of posts in the threads about the boys in this bee!  So far we have gotten through Mr, January, Sandy Greenberg, and Mr. February, Andrew Youngman.  Blocks have been made and mailed and we await final pieces from both of them!

And since Mr. March Andrew Joslyn was kind enough to have already decided his block choice, those have been posted along and they will be joining the others he will use to create his masterpiece!

Andrew requested the Inverted Star – the block is from Jessica Boschen on commonthreads.typepad.com.  It was quite fun to put together and luckily Jessica recommends taking a picture of your layout to refer to, because as you move things around you can forget where you meant to put something!

Here are the finished blocks:

Modern Instabee 2014

Well, yes indeed, after 25 plus years of sewing and never having participated in a quilting bee or block exchange, here I am in not one but two bees this year!  This one was started by three of my favorite Instagram friends, Jessica, Lisa and Lisa.  We were all ooooohhh and aaahhh about Lindsey Connor’s Modern Bee book.  It is a delightful book that provides 13 quilts to make with friends.

And what started as a lark grew into a hive and grew into more hives!  I lost count but I believe there are fourteen now!  And from what I have seen on Instagram there is now an Australian chapter!

So if you are on Instagram, look for the Moderninstabee2014 hashtag!  and check out the wonderful quilting work by Hive 1 – sewbeait, jessicaquilter, missplanner, pamsaylor53, sqragan, moogiequilter, cristycreates, crinklelove, justalittleoffquilter, lisaquiltslikeaboss, and the mind behind the hive brazenlisa (and me of course).

Here are my February blocks for sewbeait:

And then we moved on to March for jessicaquilter.

And I also had to create labels to provide to everyone based on the awesome label that was created (I couldn’t get the little camera to digitize, but the bee is too cute).

Having a fun 2014!

Feathers QAL Nydia Kehnle and Alison Glass

Well off to a rousing start for 2014!  I have sent off my January and February #NGAQB blocks to their new homes.  I made an excellent Exploding Star from Lisa’s superb pattern (which was trending number two in Craftsy!), and I made got started on the #LuckystarsBOM (I will post on that separately soon I promise).

I finally got started on my Feathers Quilt Along!  I caught this on Instagram and loved the pattern and thought this would be a great new adventure.  So courtesy of Nydia at http://www.add-crafter.com/ and of course http://alisonglass.com/ I am Feathering along!

Feathers QAL

I decided to use fabrics from Alison Glass lines that I have available as well as some peppered cottons and a couple of items from Julia Horner’s recent line.  I was originally going to use a black background that turned out to have a very uncooperative directional fabric!  I switched gears to a basket weave black.

The pattern is paper piecing, which I have always loved but got away from over the years.  I have found myself going back to it a lot lately!  The instructions in the pattern are well written and easy to follow and of course Nydia’s blog has helpful tips, tricks and guidance!

Here’s my fabric haul for the project, pre cutting!  And speaking of cutting – I was going to follow the cutting instructions in the pattern and have at it, but I kept overthinking color placement and got stalled!  So I cut out all the pattern pieces instead, put them up on my design wall, and am now just doing an eclectic mix of color combinations as I go.  So far, I’ve gotten two columns done and am absolutely loving the colors and layout.  I will update this post as I make more progress!

So it is January 7th and I have made some great progress on this piece!  All the columns are complete and I am doing a happy dance.  I could not be happier with the results.  The pattern is great – well written, easy to follow, and goes together pretty quickly once you get the pace going!  I have to sew the sashings on and then I will have a completed quilt top.  Then onto the debate of how to quilt it.

And I decided that I wanted this professionally quilted, so it went off to my favorite long armer Sue Kappes – you can see her work here:  http://kappeskreations.com/.  She has done several quilts for me and I love working with her and letting her get creative on my stuff.  And she got creative!  I’ve posted pictures of the final piece so you can see the stellar finish!IMG_3065 IMG_3066 IMG_3069 IMG_3070 IMG_3068

January 7th and all the columns are constructed. Now to get it all together!

A most phenomenal block!

I had a really amazing New Year’s Eve!  Dinner with some wonderful friends at a great restaurant here in Hanover PA.  I long ago gave up hope of staying up much beyond 9:30 pm and true to form I was asleep by 10!  Of course, the Brooklyn Chocolate Stout (with 10% alcohol) probably helped that process along.  I do not drink much anymore, and even one or two beers or a glass of wine and I am out!

Well rested, I had a magnificent New Year’s Day.  An Instagram friend had sent me a phenomenal pattern she had developed.  Called ‘Exploding Star’, it is foundation paper piecing at it’s finest.  FPP is a very useful tool for the really intricate piecing that you would have extreme difficulty accomplishing with rotary cutting.  I am not, I repeat not, a hand piecer (those who are, I envy your patience – I tried but do not have the level of focus needed).

There are eight quandrants and after I got my groove I was running about a half hour each.  I used some Timeless Treasures Rain for the explosions, a center comprised of Michael Miller Technicolor and a background from Classic Cottons (Joann’s from a couple years ago).

It went together smoothly and I am planning another adventure on this block.  I think rather than alternating with a background fabric, I will truly let it explode and just do all the 1/4 inch strips in colors!

Happy new year!

And what do you have planned for 2014?

I am very excited for the upcoming year.  2014 is taking me on quilting adventures that I have never been on before.

I have to begin with what I am most excited about and that is the #NGAQB.  What’s that you say!  Well, for background you should know about the antics I have had on Instragram.  I blame it on Rio.  No, actually I have to blame it on molli_sparkles (http://www.mollisparkles.com/).  It was a few months back where several us on IG were going back and forth on some posts and he was kind enough to suggest that we do a quilt bee with just the guys.  It became known as the No Girls Allowed Quilt Bee and we are all looking forward to the 2014 adventures we are going to have.

Only Instagram knows the full story
Only Instagram knows the full story

I have to admit to a bit of an intimidation factor going on!  Some of the guys in the group have quite impressive credentials and I am hoping that my work is up to the challenge!  Hopefully they won’t kick me out when I forget to clip a thread!

But I really have in a short period of time developed a feeling of quilt community and camaraderie with all the guys who are involved in this adventure.  I will be honest – quilting has for me been a rather solo endeavor.  I tried to get involved in quilt groups before with limited success (being the only guy was just wretched).  And while these days I have evolved into someone who can walk into a quilt shop and just have fun, there was a time where the ‘oh, did your wife send you here for something’ or ‘you look a little lost’ sometimes irritated me enough that I left!  I have not had that happen lately, especially here where I am known in both my LQS and the local Joann’s (yes, I know the store layout better than some of the folks who work there which is a little scary).  So this bee adventure is a big step for me in terms of growing as a quilter and becoming more engaged with those who share my passion for fabric and quilting.

Look for massive doses of postings here and on IG in the month of May!  I have asked for blocks that will be used to complete something I started a while back when this was posted to IG.  This so caught my attention that I started cutting squares of fabric at 4:00 a.m. and had the layout on my design wall by 7!  He is just waiting for the blocks I have requested and then I plan on doing a better banner across the top.  We will see!

I’ve completed my January blocks which have gone off to the UK and am mailing my February blocks off as well.  Overachiever?  Probably a little bit but also really, really nervous since this is the first time I have done something like this and I am really obsessing about time commitments (work is looking to be a real zoo in January and February).  The excellent pattern and tutorial was from http://thepeonyteacup.blogspot.co.uk/2012/06/lone-starburst-paper-pieced-block.html.

I also mailed off my February blocks (shhhhh, he doesn’t know it yet).

The other 2014 adventure I will definitely be taking is the a quilt along using the Feathers pattern by Nydia Kehnle and Alison Glass.  Love Alison Glass’ fabric, love the pattern and am looking forward to doing this.  Not sure if I will finish in time (but I hope to!).

And then of course I confess to a few leftovers from 2013 which need to be quilted.  I need to get back to a lovely project using V Christenson Simply Style fabrics.  And I can adventure back  into Tula Pink blocks or 500 Blocks or…well, all the things I’d like to do just is very long, so we shall see as the year progresses.  The most important part for me is that I will be undertaking all kinds of new quilting adventures in 2014 and hope you will be too.  Happy and healthy new year to all!

Wrapping Up 2013

Well, 2013 has been a very interesting year (yes, when someone uses ‘interesting’ that just means trouble).

Life in general has been good.  I continue to have issues with vertigo and with spine problems both of which can sometimes make my quilting adventures challenging.  But you muddle along!

I had an opportunity to buy a local quilt shop earlier this year, and am still a little bit disappointed with myself for not taking the risk.  I wasn’t quite positioned to retire from my day job, so I had to pass.

I also joined Instragram, which quite frankly has provided me with more quilting inspiration than I have had for years.  Watching all the new projects, concepts, and ideas that come from the variety of people I follow.  I have become virtual friends with a marvelous group of people from all over the world and I have to say thanks to them for all their support.  They are a great group of folks!

I bought a Juki, breaking decades of Bernina tradition.  I still have my Berninas (two of them!) and they are still my go to machine, but the Juki has a little more ‘industrial oomph’ to is so for some of my bag making projects where I am using rather thick upholstery or home dec fabrics.

And I started to blog!  Who knew!  I just started back in November, so I have not spent as much time as needed on it to get it to where I would like it to be.  Part of my 2014 plan!

Between quilts and embroidery projects, I have I think had a pretty productive year.  I developed some new techniques and found some new tools that have added to skill set.  I have enjoyed a return to foundation paper piecing (still not willing to explore English paper piecing, though I do have some papers for it!).  I bought Electric Quilt 7 – I have missed it so.  My computer that expired a couple years ago had my EQ6 on it and I’d never been able to reinstall EQ, so I bit the bullet and purchased EQ7.  Glad I did.

I am sure there is a lot more I could say about 2013, but all in all it was a great year with lots of great fun.  Thanks for sharing my 2013 adventures (at least the last part of the year!) and hope you enjoy 2014 with me.

And I hope to have at least one last finish in before the year ends!  Quillted, binding sewn on, just need to hand sew binding and I am done with my Giggles quilt!  Yeah.
